Präteritum — Narrative Past Tense

Extended use of the simple past for written and narrative contexts

At B1, you extend your use of Präteritum beyond sein/haben/modal verbs to include all strong (irregular) verbs in their written/narrative context. Präteritum is the tense of stories, novels, newspaper reports, and formal accounts of past events. Mastering strong verb Präteritum forms allows you to read and write German narratives fluently.

1

Strong verb Präteritum: stem change + specific endings

Strong verbs change their stem vowel in Präteritum. The ich/er/sie/es forms have NO ending: ich ging, er ging. The du form adds -st, wir/sie forms add -en, ihr adds -t: du gingst, wir gingen, ihr gingt, sie gingen. No -te- like weak verbs — the vowel change is the signal.

2

Mixed (irregular weak) verbs: vowel change + -te endings

A small group of verbs combines both: they change the stem AND add -te endings: denken → dachte (thought), bringen → brachte (brought), kennen → kannte (knew), nennen → nannte (named), rennen → rannte (ran), senden → sandte (sent), wenden → wandte (turned).

3

Narrative Präteritum for sequence of events

In written narratives, Präteritum describes the sequence of past events: Er betrat das Zimmer, setzte sich, öffnete das Buch und begann zu lesen. (He entered the room, sat down, opened the book and began to read.) Each action flows into the next — this is the cinematic quality of Präteritum.

4

Plusquamperfekt for earlier past actions

To show that one past action happened BEFORE another past action, use Plusquamperfekt: Als er ankam, hatte Maria schon gegessen. (When he arrived, Maria had already eaten.) Plusquamperfekt = hatte/war + Partizip II — the 'past of the past'.

Narrative Präteritum + Plusquamperfekt (hatte gelernt)

  • Learn Präteritum forms of the 20 most common strong verbs — they appear constantly in texts: gehen→ging, kommen→kam, sehen→sah, geben→gab, stehen→stand, liegen→lag.
  • Use the vowel change patterns as memory anchors. Once you know 'ei → ie' (schreiben→schrieb), you also know bleiben→blieb, reiben→rieb, treiben→trieb.
  • Wissen (to know a fact) is one of the most common mixed verbs — it's used constantly: Ich wusste das nicht. (I didn't know that.) / Wussten Sie, dass...? (Did you know that...?)
  • When reading German novels, underline Präteritum forms and note their infinitives. This active reading habit builds mastery faster than drilling isolated forms.
  • Adding -te to strong verbs: ✗ Er gehte → ✓ Er ging (strong: stem change only).
  • Forgetting the vowel change pattern: ✗ Er gebt → ✓ Er gab (e→a pattern in geben).
  • Confusing kennen and wissen Präteritum: kennen → kannte | wissen → wusste. Both mean 'to know' but different: kennen = to know a person/thing, wissen = to know a fact.
