B2 introduces more sophisticated conjunction structures that allow precise expression of proportional relationships, hypothetical comparisons, and conditions. These structures — je...desto (the more...the more), als ob/als wenn (as if/as though), the extended use of falls/sofern, and two-part conjunctions like sowohl...als auch — are hallmarks of sophisticated German writing and speech.
'je...desto' — proportional comparison (the more...the more)
Je mehr du lernst, desto besser wirst du. (The more you learn, the better you'll get.) Structure: Je + comparative + subject + verb (V-last!), desto + comparative + verb + subject. Note: the 'je' clause has verb-LAST order (like a subordinate clause). The 'desto' clause has verb-FIRST (inversion). Both elements are in comparative form.
'als ob' / 'als wenn' — as if (Konjunktiv II follows)
Als ob and als wenn introduce hypothetical comparisons: Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste. (He acts as if he knew everything.) | Sie sah aus, als wenn sie geweint hätte. (She looked as if she had been crying.) Important: these phrases REQUIRE Konjunktiv II in the following clause. Verb goes to the end.
Two-part conjunctions (zweiteilige Konnektoren)
sowohl...als auch (both...and): Sowohl die Lage als auch der Preis sind perfekt. | nicht nur...sondern auch (not only...but also): Er ist nicht nur intelligent, sondern auch fleißig. | weder...noch (neither...nor): Weder er noch sie wollte aufgeben. | entweder...oder (either...or): Entweder du kommst mit oder ich gehe alleine.
'ohne dass' and 'anstatt dass' — when subjects differ
When the subjects of the two clauses differ: Er verließ das Haus, ohne dass jemand es merkte. (He left the house without anyone noticing.) | Anstatt dass sie arbeitete, schlief sie. (Instead of working, she slept.) Compare with 'ohne zu' / 'anstatt zu' which require the same subject.
Conditional 'sofern', 'falls', 'vorausgesetzt dass'
'Sofern' (provided that/as long as): Sofern das Wetter gut ist, findet die Veranstaltung statt. | 'Vorausgesetzt, dass' (provided that — formal/legal): Vorausgesetzt, dass alle zustimmen, können wir beginnen. More formal and restrictive than 'wenn'.
